New guidance on measures to prevent and control SARS-CoV-2 infections

Viral variants and the anti-COVID-19 vaccination programme: guidance on measures to prevent and control SARS-CoV-2 infections

Published: 24 March 2021

The prolonged circulation of SARS-CoV-2 and the emergence of viral variants, some of which are of public health concern (Variant Of Concern, Voc), are being investigated for their presence and spread. In this framework, the document “Interim indications on prevention and control measures for SARS-CoV-2 infections with regard to variants and anti-COVID-19 vaccination”, written by the ISS, Ministry of Health, AIFA and Inail working group, has recently been published.

The prolonged circulation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the emergence of viral variants, some of which are of public health concern (Variant Of Concern, Voc), are being investigated for their presence and spread. In this framework, the document “Interim indications on measures for the prevention and control of SARS-CoV-2 infections with regard to variants and anti-COVID-19 vaccination”, written by the ISS, Ministry of Health, AIFA and Inail working group, has recently been published. The progress of the vaccination campaign against the infection and the emergence of different variants of the virus, characterised by a higher degree of infectivity, raise several questions on pharmacological, prevention and control measures for Coronavirus infections, which the document intends to address. Although knowledge of the new viral variants is still being consolidated, specific indications are provided, based on the evidence available to date, which can serve as a reference for the implementation of strategies for the prevention and control of Covid-19 cases sustained by these viral variants. In particular, for molecular diagnostic tests, it is recommended to use a multi-target test as a real-time PCR diagnostic system.
