Webinar: “Legal aspects of SARS-CoV-2 genome data processing and sharing across Europe”

Published: 15 March 2022

March 30th 2022 - h. 10:00 AM-12:00 PM (CEST) - Online, Registration required
The main goal of this webinar is to address the legal aspects involved in the mobilization of SARS-CoV-2 genomic data in Europe. The seminar is specifically designed for organizations and people responsible for data brokering across healthcare systems, research infrastructures and publicly accessible data sharing platforms.
The primary focus of the seminar is to illustrate a collection of examples that highlight how legal aspects come into play when genetic, personal and phenotypic data are processed and shared in different Countries.

ELIXIR-CONVERGE is a project funded by the European Commision which aims to promote the standardization of life sciences data analysis and management across Europe. For these reasons the main purpose of the project is the production of a dedicated toolkit for life scientists; the toolkit will help to promote data sharing through publicly accessible platforms, which would remarkably increase the volume of information freely available for researchers and their scientific activity.
Work-Package 9 (WP9) in particular aims to promote SARS-CoV-2 sequences mobilization across European and extraEuropean countries, mainly by sharing data on open source platforms such as the European Nucleotide Archive (ENA). Doing so, in fact, data will be more easily accessible for COVID-19 variants surveillance and, in general, for SARS-CoV-2 related data analysis.

The webinar organized by ELIXIR-CONVERGE WP9 on March 30th 2022 fits into this background. The purpose of this seminar, in fact, is to illustrate the legal aspects that come into play during the mobilization of genomic data, especially when sharing SARS-CoV-2 genomic sequences. For this reason the meeting is specifically addressed to organizations and people responsible for data brokering across healthcare systems, research infrastructures and publicly accessible data sharing platforms. However, the workshop will not provide participants with legal advice, but with examples of legal contexts from different countries that involve data sharing and contracts between organizations responsible for data production and analysis.
Before the webinar, participants will be required to answer a short survey related to its content.
